Talking about alternatives to traditional care. I am surprised that the adult placement and homeshare models are not mentioned These models have been accepted as good practice (Independence wellbeing and Choice) both offer a range of opportunities and experiences to people who need care and support in a nurturing and supportive family type environment. As vice chair of the National Association of Adult Placement Services (NAAPS) I suggest you contact NAAPS chief executive Sian Lockwood on 0151 227 3499 as both organisations may be able to work in partnership to further your cause.

Domiciliary care home charges should be set at a maximum charge which reflects the amount of attendance allowance a person can receive: £41.65 for lower rate and £62.25 for the higher rate. Yes, these rates are derisory low and should be increased. Also, I believe there should be a third level for people in privately funded care homes.
Another area where the elder are being hit is in residential care homes. The disparity between Warwickshire County Councils maximum care home fee and that of a care home in Leamington Spa is now £122 per week! People on low incomes can no longer have there loved ones living nearby.

Local Government is unavoidably going to produce a social care patchwork . To those people who like local government providng local services the result is a rich variety, while those who who don’t like it say the result is a postcode lottery.
Of course there should be a uniform set of high standards required of all social care providers (private or local govt.) but that can only be arrived at by householders accepting that it is something we ALL have to pay for in our local council tax plus some from our own pockets (where that is possible).
Politicians (local and national) have to admit that more and better services for a longer-living population has to be paid for somehow. It cannot be done on the cheap.Something better than the annual competition between Council depts.for a share of a budget which is dominated by councillors’ election prospects has to be designed.

The future of social care is of particular interest to older people, many of whom have hearing impairment that prevents them listening to radio. Would the BBC be prepared to post a transcript of the programme on this website for the benefit of all hearing impaired people? Alternativley are there any listeners or charities with the time to do a transcript and make it available, perhaps on the Help the Aged website?
