In Asian cultures, the children care for their parents. The China national government pays 40% of costs, the local government pays 40% of the costs and the patient pays 20% of the health care costs. In 2005, the New Rural Co-operative Medical Care System (NRCMCS) was intended to increase medical care accessibility in rural areas.
The Chinese reliance on families to care for older citizens makes it easier for the government to focus on other health care issues. While the UK government warns against accepting the American health care system, it suggests that a return to the family-based health care system of Asia might be wise. UK Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said, “We must restore and reinvigorate the social contract between generations.” Family is the core of a healthy society.
